WordPress 7.2 will be the final major release of 2026. The roadmap for this release outlines the features and improvements the WordPress core team is working on.
However, not every planned feature will necessarily make it into the final release. The roadmap explains that the team is actively working on these items, but some may be delayed.
Here are some of the key changes planned for WordPress 7.2.
Security Improvements
Security is one of the main areas of focus for WordPress 7.2.
The team plans to improve Application Passwords. These changes may include email notifications when someone adds an application password, better detection of non-HTTPS environments, safer default user role settings, and support for the SameSite cookie attribute.
The Secrets API is also under consideration. If it makes it into WordPress 7.2, it will only be available through the command-line interface (CLI). A user interface may come in a future release.
A proposal for sudo mode is also expected, but the details are not yet available.
Blocks and APIs
Several improvements are planned for WordPress blocks and APIs.
A new Description List block may be introduced. The Table of Contents block is expected to move to server-side rendering, which will change how WordPress generates its output.
The Icon block may also get a keyword search feature, making it easier to find the right icon.
The team is also working on the Interactivity API. The first step in this update is to render only trusted values, helping improve how interactive features handle data.
Better Design Tools
WordPress 7.2 may bring more flexibility to block design and styling.
Planned improvements include custom block states, support for form elements in Global Styles, and expanded and more consistent block supports.
The team also plans to continue working on responsive style states and add better ways to view inherited styles. These changes could make it easier for users to understand and manage block styles across their websites.
Improvements to the WordPress Admin
The WordPress admin experience is another area receiving attention.
The team plans to make the Site Editor more extensible, giving developers more options to customize and extend it.
Work on DataViews and DataForms will also continue. One planned improvement is a post inspector built with DataForms.
Another change involves replacing Dashicons in the admin bar and admin menu. This could modernize parts of the WordPress interface.
Media and Performance
WordPress 7.2 may introduce dynamic galleries and further improvements to client-side media features.
The team is also looking at replacing script and style concatenation with prefetching. This work focuses on how WordPress loads scripts and styles and could help improve performance.
React 19 May Take More Time
The roadmap includes an upgrade to React 19, but the team considers it unlikely to be fully included in WordPress 7.2.
Developers should not assume that this upgrade will be part of the release. It may take more time to complete.
Meanwhile, WordPress AI development is continuing through separate plugins. Projects such as Abilities and the MCP Adapter are being developed in the AI and MCP Adapter plugins rather than being listed as confirmed features for WordPress 7.2.
Collaborative Editing Is Not Planned for WordPress 7.2
Collaborative editing is intentionally excluded from the WordPress 7.2 roadmap.
The team has explained its reasons for moving toward a server-aware approach to collaboration. This work is still important, but it is not planned for this release.
WordPress 7.2 Release Schedule
The current schedule includes three important dates:
- Beta 1: October 20, 2026
- Release Candidate 1 (RC1): November 17, 2026
- Final Release: December 8, 2026
The testing stages give developers an opportunity to check their plugins and themes before the final release.
What Should WordPress Developers Do?
If you develop WordPress plugins or themes, now is a good time to review the roadmap and identify any changes that could affect your projects.
Test your plugins and themes during the beta and release candidate stages. Report issues and share feedback early, while there is still time for the team to consider improvements before the final release.
Get Ready for WordPress 7.2
WordPress 7.2 includes plans for security, blocks, design tools, the admin experience, and performance. Although some features may not make the final cut, following the roadmap and testing early will help you prepare for the next major WordPress release.
